The museum owes it's collection of a number
of Sikh pieces to Col. Thackwell a local resident who also commanded
forces during the Second Sikh War. Thackwell, both wrote of his
time in the wars, and collected numerous artefacts from the battles
which were then presented to the museum. Included within the main
exhibition are some excellent examples of Lahori and other Indian
sword making including two finely chased Chakkars and a full suit
of chain mail.
Main Items of Interest:
- The Colonel Thackwell collection of arms and armour taken during
the
--- second
Anglo-Sikh war.
- Contemporary prints of Guru Nanak dev ji and Guru Gobind Singh
Ji
- One elaborate Kashmir embroidered Shawl
- One Sikh Phulkari Spread
They also have many other North Indian/Punjabi Specimens but without
a clear Sikh origin. Specimens are currently within their reserve
collection , not on public display, but can be viewed by prior
appointment.
Ipswich Museum also has extensive resource collections (Zoology,
botany, geology, archaeology, local history, ethnography) which
are not on general display but are available to interested visitors
by appointment.
