Prince Arthur(left)
and Prince Alfred in the costume of Sikh Princes, Osborne,
6 September 1854
Prince Alfred (later Duke
of Edinburgh and of Saxe-Coburh-Gotha) and Prince Arthur
(later Duke of Connaught) were the second and third sons
of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Although the royal
children often took part in plays in plays and tableaux
vivants, which they sometimes presented on special occasions,
such as their parents' wedding anniversary, there seems
to be no special significance about the date of this photograph.
It was, however, taken soon after the visit to Osborne of
the Maharaja Duleep Singh in August 1854, and it is probable
that the costumes were a gift from him.
