Sketch, after
taking the city of Moultan, near the 'Chunda Choke,' or
Great Bazaar 2/1/1849
Mool Raj having got his
magazine in the fort containing 400,000 Lbs. of gun powder
blown up by a shell from the beseiging troops became helpless
and surrendered on 22.1.1849 at Multan to General Whish,
who was assited by the Darbar troops. Raja Sher Singh who
had three horses killed under him in this action, lost the
battle of Gujrat on 21.2.1849. Writing about this battle,
General Thackwell, who was present wrote, "In this
action as well as at Chillianwala, Sikhs caught hold of
the bayonets of their assailants with their left hands and
closing with their adversaries, dealt furious swordblows
with their right...... This circumstance alone will suffice
to demonstrate the rare species of courage possessed by
these men." He added, 'The fidelity displayed by the
Sikh gunners is worthy of record: the devotion with which
they remained at their posts, when the atmosphere around
them was absolutely fired by the British guns, does not
admit description. - - Sir Winston Churchill's accounts
of Anglo-Sikh Wars, Karnail Singh
